VCA safety signs

Safety signs communicate hazards, prohibitions, mandatory actions, emergency routes and fire-fighting information quickly. For VCA preparation, learn to combine the colour, shape and symbol with the action you must take.

Quick answer

For VCA, recognise five main groups: prohibition signs are usually red and round, warning signs yellow and triangular, mandatory signs blue and round, emergency or safe-condition signs green, and fire-equipment signs red. Always follow the meaning of the symbol and the site instructions.

Why safety signs matter

A sign gives a fast visual instruction when there may not be time for a long explanation. On construction sites, industrial premises and warehouses it can warn you before you enter a dangerous area or tell you which protection is compulsory.

A sign does not remove the hazard by itself. It supports other measures such as barriers, procedures, PPE and supervision.

Prohibition signs

Prohibition signs show what you must not do. They are commonly round with a red border and diagonal bar.

No smoking

Do not smoke in the indicated area, especially where flammable substances may be present.

No unauthorised entry

Do not enter unless you have permission and meet the site conditions.

No open flame

Keep ignition sources away from the marked area.

Warning signs

Warning signs alert you to a hazard. They are commonly triangular with a yellow background and dark symbol.

Electrical hazard

Expect dangerous voltage and follow electrical safety rules.

Suspended loads

Do not stand or pass under a load being lifted.

Hazardous substances

Check labels, instructions and required protective measures before handling.

Mandatory signs

Mandatory signs tell you what action or protection is required. They are commonly round and blue.

Safety helmet required

Wear suitable head protection in the marked zone.

Eye protection required

Use the specified goggles or face protection.

Hearing protection required

Wear hearing protection where noise exposure requires it.

Emergency and safe-condition signs

Green signs indicate safe conditions such as emergency exits, escape routes, first-aid points and assembly areas. Follow the indicated route during an emergency unless authorised instructions say otherwise.

Fire-fighting signs

Red fire-safety signs identify equipment such as extinguishers, hose reels and alarm points. Know where the equipment is, but only use it when it is safe and you are expected or trained to do so.

How to answer sign questions in VCA practice

First identify the category from colour and shape, then read the symbol and decide what action follows.

Do not confuse a warning with a mandatory instruction: a warning tells you about a danger; a mandatory sign tells you what you must do.

Frequently asked questions

What does a blue round safety sign mean?

It normally indicates a mandatory action, such as wearing a helmet, safety glasses or hearing protection.

What is the difference between a warning sign and a prohibition sign?

A warning sign alerts you to a hazard. A prohibition sign tells you that a specific action is not allowed.

Are green signs used for emergency routes?

Yes. Green safe-condition signs commonly identify emergency exits, escape routes, first aid and assembly points.

Does a safety sign replace other control measures?

No. Signs support safety measures but do not remove hazards or replace procedures, barriers, technical controls or PPE.
